Cinematic Spaces - Thumbnails

Finally I started working on the second excerpt - "Experiments in the Intercourse" (H.G. Wells, "The First Men in the Moon"). I found it more exciting, probably because of the mysterious apparatus and slightly different surroundings.

Also, I acted upon the advice and decided to look through Victorian era, in order to find inspiration for the machine. Here are the silhouettes I managed to make so far:

Three further developed projects:

"(...) we emerged from our chamber into the cavern from which the light had come (...). But at last the great place that formed a background to our movements asserted itself."

First two concepts of the cavern.
In the first picture I started by drawing the machine. To be honest, I found it so amusing, that I decided to take it a step further and that's when all these additional "mysterious apparatus" projects came from.

From now on, I would like to focus on the surroundings and environment more, than on the machine itself, although I'm going to come back to it when doing the final concept.

  1. Hey Samantha,

I've seen this particular space - with its mysterious apparatus - attempted a few times over the years - but these thumbnails are the most exciting - in terms of the logic behind them - and the 'theatrical' use of the blue light source. In this example, the machine DOES count as an integral aspect of the space itself, so the work you're doing in terms of design is entirely valid. An exciting post! Hope you enjoy your Photoshop/Maya sessions today :)

  2. Hi samantha,
I really like your first two concepts of the cavern, I love the grainy texture that the first drawing has. The use of lighting is very strong in the second drawing, and i think that the atmosphere that the lighting creates is really interesting. I can't wait to see how you push these concepts.

  3. I have said it before and I will say it again. All the designs in this post are fantastic. the silhouettes have clearly helped you to create the most incredible machine inventions. Your painting technique used on the three developed images is brilliant and beautiful. Your cavern designs are fantastically gritty and moody, looming out of the dark. I hope you're proud of these designs! They're incredible!

  4. Hi Samantha,

These few pieces are looking really stunning. The colour and texture work really well and instantly add some depth and a certain atmosphere. What I really like however is the process, working from those Victorian shapes has helped generate something new work that stands out. The only comment I'd make is that the last piece of work maybe needs some tweaks to the composition. It doesn't quite look like it is 16:9 format. If it were a bit wider and cropped slightly at the top it could look really stunning. Try looking at "the rule of thirds" as a way of arranging the composition.
